What works best? Short or long blog posts?
I've tried both, and I want to share with you my thoughts.
At the end, let me know if you agree.
Short Blog Posts
Short blog posts are great to share quick news and thoughts with your audience.
Let's say there's a breaking story and you want to alert your readers about it.
Or, maybe you want to update your blog multiple time a day. In which case, the only real way to do so is to use short blogs posts.
If you're looking to open up a discussed, without writing a lot of stuff yourself, you can do this with a short post. Providing you have regular commenters, they'll fill up the rest of the page for you.
Long Blog Posts
Long blog posts are great for going into depth about something, or just describing it in more detail.
With a long blog you can generally tell that people know what they're talking about.
Providing what you write about is interesting, long blog posts are great for the 'stick' factor – that is, people will read to the end.
'How To' type of posts are a good example.
The Balanced View
My preference is to try and strike a bit of a balance. I've been known to use short blog posts to try and make sure that the blog has some content, although I generally prefer writing slightly longer posts – and providing a bit more meat to it.
(In fact, I'll let you into a secret. Even when I'm thinking about writing a short blog post, there's often so much good stuff I want to share that it soon turns into a long one).
For Online Marketing style blogs, I do think that longer posts win out, but you should test it in your niche and find out exactly what people want to see.
Short Or Long? You Decide.
